LOS ANGELES, CA — YOUTHskin/care® unveils its first three products this summer—a lavender bath soak, blood orange body exfoliator, and body cleanser in bergamot and lavender—as part of a new natural beauty line developed by, and for, the young, informed, and connected consumer generation. 27-year-old founder, Kendra Marie Studdert, and her partner, 28-year-old Michael Gyulai, have developed a fully interactive beauty brand that emphasizes USDA certified organic ingredients, European essential oils, and contemporary packaging and presentation.
Studdert’s generation grew up surrounded by artificial and chemical ingredients,
and now they examine labels, expect transparency in product descriptions, and seek ingredients they can evaluate themselves. Studdert consequently developed her formulas and packaging in a way that reflected what she—a twenty-something with more than five years’ experience working for top global cosmetic companies—envisioned the next generation of beauty brands should look like.
“I saw cosmetics getting so complex—so technical and confusing,” says Studdert. “The labels on the simplest products required a scientific textbook to translate—even for someone like me with an industry background. Beauty should be natural; beauty should be easy. For young women who want to maintain their skin’s youthful tone, those artificial chemical ingredients—which are added to restore aging skin—are actually counterproductive and lead to dryness.”
In formulating her products, Studdert combined the highest quality imported ingredients from Italy, France, and Israel with USDA certified organic components. She excluded the use of fragrances, opting instead to scent the
YOUTHskin/care® line with essential oils. The result is a skin care line that is completely paraben-free, and extraordinarily gentle on the skin.
In approaching the brand’s look, Studdert demanded
YOUTHskin/care® diverge from traditional organic branding, and instead project the same luxurious undertones of the companies she had contributed to in the past—Stila, Smashbox, Einstein Cosmetics, and DuWop.
To accomplish this, Studdert turned to a Los Angeles associate—also in his twenties—Michael Gyulai. With a background in design and new media, Gyulai helmed the translation of Studdert’s company vision to both the print and online arenas.
“I was new to the beauty industry,” says Gyulai, “and Kendra took me on a two-hour beauty-brand crash course through Sephora in South Coast Plaza [in Costa Mesa, California]. Within minutes I could spot the stark contrasts between 'organic' branding and traditional luxury beauty branding. Our stance was that natural beauty brands could be just as refined and elegant as their chemical-laden competitors, and style and social consciousness can coexist.”
“Some of my favorite products had term like 'anti-aging' in bold across their labels,” Studdert adds. “I felt the need to hide them in cupboards or drawers to avoid embarrassment. With
YOUTHskin/care®, I wanted our packaging designed in a way that was contemporary, elegant, and made women eager to keep the products displayed on their countertops or bathtub ledges.”
Studdert employed dark amber bottles, which contrast the line’s clean black-and-white labeling, while helping to preserve key ingredients from sunlight oxidation and deterioration. The result is a line of
YOUTHskin/care® products that is completely paraben-free, extraordinarily gentle on the skin, and also attractive to the eye.
